Asbestos

Follow-Up

After your medical exam you should request a full report from the doctors who did the screening. Although this report should explain the results of the tests to you in non-medical terms, it is always a good idea to discuss the results with a doctor you know and trust to make sure you understand what the results mean. If any of the tests are abnormal, the report should include recommendations for further testing and follow up care.

If the tests are normal, the results should recommend ways you can reduce your risk of developing severe, disabling asbestos-related illness. These ways include stopping smoking, controlling exposures to dusts and hazardous substances at work, and seeking prompt medical care for colds, flu and any other symptoms of asbestos-related illness. If the tests show abnormalities, you should be advised of what type of follow-up care is needed. Often, further testing is recommended to confirm a diagnosis of asbestos-related illness.

Not all physicians have the training and background to conduct asbestos disease screening programs. If you do have an asbestos-related illness, you may be eligible for compensation for medical expenses and any income lost as a result. You may also have the right to sue the manufacturers of the asbestos in court.
